GMM Pfaudler is a leading supplier of highly engineered, critical equipment and process systems for energy, chemical and industrial markets. Our Engineered Systems (ES) Group designs and constructs process systems including Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE) Systems, Reactor Systems, Column Systems and Temperature Control Units (TCU’s).

The Application Engineer (AE) will be part of the ES Group our facility in Rochester, NY. The AE will promote sales, complete preliminary designs, complete cost estimates and secure orders for the ES product lines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties include those listed below. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Complete preliminary process designs and calculations along with cost and schedule estimates and develop proposals to secure orders for process systems (including WFE systems, reactor systems, column systems and TCUs). The engineer must rely on his/her process engineering capabilities and experience to start with a “blank sheet” and design a process solution for a customer’s needs, which may be design of a new process or design improvements for an existing process.

Work directly with customers for their process system inquiries.

  • Review customer inquiry specifications and communicate with customer to determine customer process needs.

  • Develop the preliminary process system design to meet customer’s process requirements.

  • Develop the cost estimate for the system based on recent system project component costs or by obtaining vendor pricing as required.

  • Develop customer proposals for the systems ranging from simple email proposals for rough budget proposals to detailed firm price proposals in Word format that are technically complete and professional in appearance.

Work with customers and Pfaudler Pilot Test Engineer and Technician to plan and execute pilot testing (evaporation, distillation, reaction, and drying) in the Pfaudler Process Test Facility (customer liaison to pilot plant engineers). Testing is used to confirm preliminary design and Pfaudler equipment performance and collect data for scale-up to commercial scale systems.

While most customer communications are through email, phone and online conference calls, occasional travel to customer sites to promote sales, review applications/proposals and to close orders for ES systems projects is also required. Travel requirements are light (<<5%).

Upon receipt of inquiries, enter the customer and opportunity in Salesforce and continually update the opportunity information through the inquiry stage.

Upon receipt, review customer orders and terms and conditions for accuracy and conformance with proposal and corporate guidelines and business practice. Enter orders into the Movex business system.

Meet with Original Equipment (OE) or the ES Project Manager for detailed project handoffs and act as consultant in early phases of project through customer P&ID approval (scope definition).

Work closely with the Pfaudler Operations department to monitor scheduled shipment dates of Pfaudler fabricated equipment to ensure timely delivery and expedite as needed.

Complete post project reviews for knowledge of process design changes or improvements necessary for the system and leverage this knowledge for future proposals and orders.

Customer communications/support throughout the proposal stage, order stage and as well as post order follow-up/support.

Set up and maintain customer electronic and/or paper files.

Continuously update proposal formats and sales tools (data sheets, presentations, etc.).

Complete post project reviews for knowledge of process design changes or system improvements and leverage this knowledge for future proposals and orders.

Customer communications/support throughout the proposal stage, order stage, as well as post order follow-up/support.

Set up and maintain customer electronic and/or paper files.

Continuously update proposal formats and sales tools (data sheets, presentations, etc.).

Some duties may be modified and/or other duties may be assigned as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No direct supervision responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

15 years of experience (minimum) with chemical process system design. Project engineering and project management experience considered a plus. Heat transfer, reaction and/or evaporation (distillation/separations) process design experience is a must. Sales experience is a plus but not required.

Must be a self-starter and focused on customer service.

Excellent communications skills required, both verbal and in writing, for internal communications as well as for customer communications, presentations, and proposals. Must be able to speak well in front of small audiences or individuals to promote sales.

Good computer skills required:

  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint for general use is required.

  • Experience with Aspen Plus (or similar) for process simulations is a plus.

  • Experience with Aspen Exchanger Design (or similar) for heat exchanger sizing is a plus.

  • Experience with Microsoft Project (or similar) for project scheduling is a plus.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A BS in Chemical Engineering is preferred, but a BS in Mechanical Engineering with heavy chemical process design experience or mass transfer system design experience is also considered.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must speak and write English proficiently. Must have the following communication skills:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively (listen and speak) for technical discussions with customers, to understand their needs and explain Pfaudler designs. Must also communicate effectively for technical discussions with internal technical personnel to define and discuss Pfaudler and/or customer needs and designs.

  • Ability to write technically sound mechanical specifications, instructions and proposals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Must have the ability to complete basic process design calculations (e.g. mass or volumetric flow rates, mass transfer, pressure, temperature, unit conversions, etc.) Must have ability to complete basic financial calculations (e.g. costs, margins, discounts, commission, etc.).

REASONING ABILITY

Must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must have ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Primarily the work environment is a typical office environment. The employee will also be required to enter the Pfaudler or vendor workshop environments to track job progress, inspect equipment and system components and accompany customers during inspections. The employee will also be required to visit customer plant sites to view existing or proposed equipment installations and/or commission new process systems. The customer plant sites are typical chemical and pharmaceutical operating plant sites where the employee will be required to follow the plant site safety regulations.
