The technical Product Owner II maximizes the value of the development team and is responsible for effective product backlog management. Success requires that the entire organization must respect their decisions. These decisions are visible in the content and ordering of the product backlog and through the inspectable increment at each sprint review. The Product Owner must represent the needs of all product stakeholders in the gathering of feature requests, scheduling releases, and coordinating sprints.

Salary range is $90,000–$110,000 annually (DOE), a $75/month cell phone allowance, and the following benefits:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Backlog Management: Create, prioritize, and maintain the product backlog, ensuring it is aligned with the product vision. This includes defining user stories, features, and technical tasks in collaboration with stakeholders.

  • Requirements Elicitation: Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to gather, analyze, and document product requirements. Translate these requirements into actionable tasks (product backlog items) for the development team. Innovate the process and maintain consistent standards for definition of ready and definition of done that are apparent to all.

  • Prioritization: Determine and communicate the priority of backlog items, taking into account customer feedback, business objectives, and market trends. Ensure the team is working on the most valuable features at any given time when planning sprint backlogs and releases.

  • Sprint Planning: Participate in sprint planning meetings with the development team to clarify user stories, answer questions, and provide guidance. Define the acceptance criteria for each user story.

  • Daily Involvement: Be an active member of the development team, participating in daily stand-up meetings, providing clarifications, and making real-time decisions to ensure the team's progress aligns with sprint goals. Provide leadership by modifying the sprint backlog as needed.

  • Product Demonstrations: Organize and lead sprint review meetings to showcase the product increment to stakeholders, gather feedback, and make any necessary adjustments to the product backlog. Use each sprint review as an opportunity to align product increments more closely with the evolving and blended vision of all stakeholders.

  • Release Management: Collaborate with the development team and stakeholders to plan and manage product releases. Ensure that the product is delivered on time and meets the specified quality standards.

  • Risk Mitigation: Identify and address potential risks and issues that may impact the project's success. Work to remove impediments and bottlenecks that hinder the team's progress.

  • Customer Engagement: maintain open lines of communication with customers and end-users (or their proxies) to gather feedback, understand their needs, and incorporate their input into the product development process.

COMPETENCIES (knowledge and skills needed for this position):

  • Embody the Scrum values: Courage, Respect, Focus, Openness, Commitment.

  • Experience with backlog maintenance tools: Jira, Azure DevOps, AgilePlace/Leankit, or similar.

  • Hands-on experience managing all stages of the product lifecycle.

  • Previous experience with technical teams and knowledge of software development and web technologies.

  • Team spirit, empathy, and excellent communication abilities (both written and verbal).

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Be a practical change agent: ability to balance agile idealism for tomorrow with the practical realities of status quo delivery today.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • 4+ years’ experience in software product ownership.

  • 4-year degree in IT orbusinessorequivalentexperience.

  • Excellent communication and storytelling abilities, capable of engaging and aligning diverse peers.

  • Proven team skills, including ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels within an organization, internally and externally.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Hybrid work environment (work in-office minimum one day per week required)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position will spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, which can cause muscle strain. This position will also have to do some lifting of supplies and materials from time to time.
